The United States of America is entering a unique period in its history. Wartime is difficult for all nations, and in patriotism we join to support our armed forces who dedicate their lives to preserving our freedom. But in our quest to do what is right, we at times lose perspective in the impact our actions will have as we implement them in future years.
At such a critical period in this nation, America must stand decisive and clear, but also not lose sight of the effects our actions will have in the long-term. Politicians at times believe they know the desires of people, but say so without asking those affected. It is one of these particular actions being considered that concerns the Columbus Youth Commission and others.

The Official Position of The Columbus Youth Commission, and the undersigned Co-Sponsors, on mandatory national service in the War on Terrorism:
1) We support the government of the United States, its governing leaders, and its laws. As law-abiding youth and supportive adults, we commend the heroism and dedication displayed by our men and women in uniform, and all involved in national and community service. We also extend sincere gratitude to those who are involved in civic duty, and admire your patriotism.
2) We disagree with the purpose of mandatory national service for people in the United States and its territories in the War on Terrorism because:
A. Such actions are unnecessary. Our nation is involved in combating global terrorism, but to enlist all young people into a massive military support system is not vital to a nation that can instead utilize its allies.
B. The number of deferments in recent bills is, frankly, nonexistent. To force our youth (the future of our nation) out of college or other education, leaving their families who may depend on their efforts at home, is irresponsible. Such an action must leave consideration for youth who may wish to serve their nation in other ways, such as furthering their education or partaking in other community initiatives that may not be government or military-sponsored. We believe that like national service, these alternatives put youth on the road toward becoming contributing and informed adults.
C. Extension of the military through entering women into the Selective Service raises serious concerns. Such tactics are futile. We believe that the military system is not as desperately strained as it appears, and that again, America should not need a much larger military if allies are effectively utilized and diplomacy is first priority. The United States should enhance its advertising of the benefits of volunteering in national service rather than making it a requirement.
D. The War on Terrorism is a different kind of war. In the 21st Century and beyond, the effects of a terror attack may not be aimed at a single nation or population. The attack itself may not be military in nature. Thus, mandatory service that only benefits the military supports of the United States is shortsighted. Homeland Security should instead invest in research, intelligence, and technological support.
3) We, the undersigned, represent the future of the United States of America. We want our futures to be in our hands. Such mandatory national service, we believe, contradicts the principles of self-determination and liberty. We do not stand for a government-controlled future as prescribed by such actions.
4) This petition is valid for the extent of the War on Terrorism. Separate national emergencies are exempt from these opinions.
We urge lawmakers to answer mandatory national service bills with swift defeat. Should a mandatory national service bill succeed in Congress, we will utilize our network of co-sponsors to create a nationwide referendum on rescinding the effects of such legislation.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
The Columbus Youth Commission, the undersigned co-sponsoring organizations, and the undersigned concerned American citizens and residents.

Wear a green ribbon to tell the world that patriotism means deciding your own destiny, not the government. Wear one each Monday. Also, if you can make ones for your friends or even make bumper stickers that say "Our Future Is Ours," we'd appreciate it! |
