Officials in the Pentagon and Congress have called for increased military recruitment, as a provision of the U.S. Patriot Act. These and some other experts claim that due to the threats of modern terrorism and an overextended military, there need to be drastic improvements in the number of recruits to keep America safe. Other officials downplay this argument, claiming that the armed forces are not as overextended as some believe, or that America would be better suited to withdraw troops from Iraq, Afghanistan, and/or other parts of the world.
One solution to this debate is to create a system of mandatory national service. Such a provision is currently in place in other nations, such as Israel or within the European Union. Here are the 2 sides, much abbreviated:
FOR: This system instills patriotism in the country, as well as loyalty. The armed forces would never run short. Youth could choose which type of military service they'd like, combat or not.
AGAINST: The system would disallow youth from their freedom of choice; for example, going to college or pursuing another career. The government should allow deferrments.
What will we do with your votes? We will submit the results of this and more upcoming votes to representatives and senators at the state and federal level, to let them know that young people care about their future. They will be presented as a detailed report so the government officials know what young people believe. All responses to this and all US Issue polls are completely anonymous. |
